This is a unique video. In October 1966 Bill Evans made a brief trip to Scandinavia with bassist Eddie Gomez for a series of concerts including a performance on Danish television. For these performances he was joined by vocalist Monica Zettelund and the house drummer at Copenhagen’s famous Jazzhus Montmartre, Alex Riel.
The TV performance was the second date of the tour and Evans took opportunity of the soundcheck to brief Riel for the performance – if you watch it appears Evans may have arrived without a set list and chooses the tunes in the moment. The cameramen of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation used this rehearsal to set up their shots and caught a full 45 minutes insight into Evans coaching Riel to form a trio that already had near telepathy between the pianist and bassist. The music includes If You Could See Me Now, Autumn Leaves and Five.
