If you’ve enjoyed this week’s cuban flavoured jazz mix you might like to dig into a whole concert performance by legendary pianist Eddie Palmieri from 2013.
Eddie and his brother Charlie, the sons of Puerto Rican immigants, were leading lights in the music scene that came out of the Bronx in the New York in the 1960s & 70s mixing patterns from Cuba and Puerto Rico with soul, jazz and other influences – very much the muscial equivalent of the cultural melting pot they grew up in.
In this concert performance Eddie leads a six piece band including the traditional cuban format three piece percussion section rather than a kit drummer. Eddie is still making great latin-american music in the studio and on stage at the age of 83, with his larger bands offering a particulalrly fiery approach to the idiom.
