Based in and around Manchester, drummer and compser Johnny Hunter is perhaps best known for his work in the more avant-garde end of the jazz spectrum. We last saw him at Scarborough Jazz with Blind Monk Trio and he’s next due to visit as part of Nishla Smith’s band. He can also be seen playing in his “chordless” jazz quartet, which explore the freedoms of music without traditional chordal accompaniment, and in free jazz band Sloth Racket.
Featured here is a new Hunter piece titled ‘Composition for Large Ensemble’ in which you can hear the many diverse influences on his music.
