The secret is out – previously one of northern jazz lovers best kept secrets, Zoe Gilby is now acknowledged as one of the UKs finest jazz vocalists, and she has a Parliamentary Jazz Award to prove it. There will be chance to hear her sing at Scarborough Jazz Festival in September (we hope!) but this video gives you a wholly different experience – a duet with bassist Andy Champion (another fantastic player northern audiences might wish they could keep to themselves) singing Nick Cave’s ‘Red Right Hand’. The setting – a tunnel originally built to transport coal to the Tyne – adds to the spookiness of the song.
Many musicians are really struggling right now with all venues closed and all gigs cancelled. But you can support them at this time by buying music, merchandise or signing up to online support. Zoe is planning a series of ‘living room gigs’ you can pay to watch, click here to read more: https://www.patreon.com/zoegilby
