Featuring in this week’s jazz mix, drummer Yussef Dayes is described as “One of the UK’s most exciting and innovative young drummers and producers” by Primary Talent International.
He incorporates a roster of influences from electronic genres such as grime and hip hop to techniques from jazz pioneers such as Miles’ drummer Billy Cobham who he studied under. His first exposure as a need-to-know artist on the London jazz scene was with Yussef Kamaal, a duo with pianist Kamaal Williams. Their album Black Focus won them the 2017 Jazz FM award for Best Breakthrough Act. Since then Yussef has collaborated with many UK artists such as Alfa Mist and has recently released an album with guitarist and vocalist Tom Misch.
